The Bridgerton cast — and author Julia Quinn — have tried to defend Benedict's shocking mistress offer to Sophie after the season 4 scene led to fan outrage
The Bridgerton cast — and author Julia Quinn — have tried to explain Benedict's shocking mistress offer to Sophie after the season 4 scene led to fan outrage. Those who read Quinn's book An Offer From a Gentleman already knew that when season 4 premiered in January 2026, Benedict's interest in a mysterious woman dubbed the Lady in Silver would create obstacles for him amid a growing attraction to housemaid Sophie .
Despite the fact that Sophie is the Lady in Silver, her social class prevented Benedict from properly courting her. Benedict instead chose to get creative by making a different suggestion at the end of part 1 which included asking that Sophie be his mistress. “I stay away because you consume me. I meant it when you said you deserved better,” he said. “And I am determined to give it to you, and more. Sophie, be my mistress.” While the moment was ripped straight from Quinn's novel, it still led to offscreen backlash for some audience members. “The big deal is that he grows and overcomes it and changes his mind and then says, ‘You are more important than what anybody else says.’ And I think it's just as romantic that he has to learn that than coming out at the get go,' Quinn exclusively told Us Weekly in February 2026 about the point of the offer. 'I like showing character growth. I don't want my characters to be perfect at the beginning. I want them to be better towards the end.” Keep scrolling to see how else the Bridgerton cast and crew attempted to defend Benedict amid the controversial story point:'In the time period, it was not unreasonable for Benedict to think that this was the right ask,' showrunner Jess Brownell told TVLine in January 2026 while admitting it was 'a huge mistake for Benedict to make.' Brownell acknowledged that viewers rooting for the fictional romance may not be thrilled, adding, 'He should be seeing Sophie as more than her class. For him to make that ask in that moment, outrage is absolutely the right reaction.''A lot of his progressiveness, not with his sexuality, but in other ways, has been performative,' she noted about Benedict's preference for traditional values. 'He is incredibly privileged and hasn't really reckoned with that privilege. He has enjoyed life to the fullest, but has never done anything really scary.' Brownell also pointed out there would be consequences if Benedict were to pursue an actual relationship with a maid. Despite the Bridgertons' social status, they would be punished by society, and this would affect Benedict's sisters, who would no longer be considered viable options for marriage. 'Deep down, Benedict is not as brave as he would like to be because he's never really stepped out in a way where he's had to be brave,' Brownell added. After some fans were outraged by Benedict's offer, author Julia Quinn spoke out, exclusively telling Us in February 2026, “It's just saying, ‘You have to make sure that viewers understand how unprecedented it would be for him to offer her marriage.’” Quinn noted that she didn't have specific requests for how her scenes were recreated but she needed the same message to come across. “That's something I just said, ‘You need to make sure they understand this, because it's going to seem really awful,’” Quinn explained of Benedict’s offer to Sophie. “And so that's why I'm always telling people, ‘Hey, the big deal is not that he does this, not that he asked her to be his mistress, because that's what would happen.’”“I really love the way it came out. I think it is a really sexy moment — until, of course, that record scratch moment when Benedict asked Sophie to be his mistress,' Brownell told Variety. 'In part, we are trying to illustrate just how big the class divide was then. And I think truly, what Benedict asks would have been considered the only way for a man — a gentleman — and a housemaid to be together during that era.' She continued: 'So it’s not that unusual for him to think that that’s romantic. However, in the larger context of this being the love of his life and us watching their love story, I think it’s absolutely the right reaction to be outraged and to be mad at him. So I think that reaction is correct and his lack of understanding about how it will come out is something we’re going to bring him up on in the back half.”While Yerin Ha jokingly told The Kit in February 2026 that Benedict's offer was a 'blood red flag,' Luke Thompson was more forgiving of his character. “I think he’s maybe a bit afraid of what being in a properly committed ‘giving someone everything’ kind of relationship would entail,” he explained. “That’s scary for him. And there’s good reasons for that.”“People can feel angry. I get it,” he shared. “But actually, I think drama should be a bit divisive. There has to be some sort of provocation, otherwise it’s not fun to watch—there’s nothing to discuss.”
