BCIs and BMIs can be a boon to people suffering from debilitating neurological conditions. But much needs to be done before the technology moves from the labs to the real world.

Have you ever thought about how many muscles your body employs to perform simple, everyday tasks like walking, brushing teeth, or making coffee? The answer is, almost of all of them.

On the other hand, BMI is more interface-oriented. However, despite these differences, both fields share the common goal of developing systems that bridge neural activity and technology to enhance human capabilities and aid in rehabilitation. Si pointed out that personalized adaptive models that evolve with the user’s neural patterns could greatly improve usability. He explained that some scientists are integrating BMI with prosthetic limbs to enable real-time neural control, making artificial limbs more intuitive and functional. Additionally, these brain-friendly technologies are emerging as an answer for precision therapies to address depression, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and chronic pain.

“Over the next five years, BCI/BMI research could be further intensified by bringing together neurological engineers, research institutions, government agencies, and industry to establish universal standards for BCI/BMI devices,” said Maiseli. Despite the technology’s potential benefits, he was surprised by the sharp decline in BCI research in the US between 2019 and 2023. However, he viewed it as an opportunity to wake researchers and engineers to advances in this field.
