DJ Durkin sounded confident in his team's mindset going into the Iron Bowl
as Auburn’s head coach in early November, interim head coach DJ Durkin has talked about his team’s ability to avoid distractions., Durkin said other programs were reaching out to Auburn players throughout the week in an attempt to lure them into the transfer portal.
He credited the players’ ability to stay focused at the time, as Auburn nearly pulled off an upset win in Nashville. Those potential distractions haven’t gone away, but Durkin sounded confident in his team’s ability to stay focused when talking to reporters on Monday. “I think this week, I would hope, I really believe our guys would be totally locked into the task at hand,” Durkin said. “That’s certainly the challenge. We talk about it every day, we address it every day, and we get ahead on all of them. It is what it is, it’s the environment we’re in.” Durkin complimented the leadership within the team when talking about how the group has avoided distractions. Junior defensive end and captain Keldric Faulk’s name often comes up in those conversations, and he spoke to the potential distractions after the loss to Vanderbilt. “Let’s keep it real, you’ve got the transfer portal fixing to open up at the end of the year. But our guys don’t even think about that,” Faulk said. “Our guys think about the next week, the next game and the next day to get better. “That’s been our message. That’s been Coach Durkin’s message for us, just to block all the distractions out and just be together as a team.” For Auburn to have a chance against a good Alabama team this week, it will need to stick to what Faulk talked about. The Tigers have done that so far, and Durkin doesn’t seem too worried about anything changing. This weekend’s Iron Bowl is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday from Jordan-Hare Stadium.
