H. Jon Benjamin, lead voice actor for the hit spy comedy Archer talks about how the show is impacted by the loss of cast member Jessica Walter, who passed away in 2021. Walter played lead character Mallory Archer for the show's first twelve seasons, receiving two Emmy nominations for her performance. Walter's other major credits include Arrested Development, Play Misty for Me, and the short-lived procedural Amy Prentiss, which also won her an Emmy.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Archer follows Sterling Archer , a talented but selfish spy who works for an agency run by his aloof and alcoholic mother Mallory The twelfth season finale saw Mallory go into hiding to escape her enemies, leaving Sterling in charge of the agency. The new season of Archer represents a power shift for the characters, with Sterling taking on the responsibility of being in charge while remaining his arrogant and egotistical self.
You know, the show sort of thread in her loss, a little bit, but I think in a reasonable way. Archer still has to stay focused on being a bunch of crazy people who kind of love/hate each other, and the show has to continue almost in her honor, but they did a really good job. Obviously, the scene that was sort of the memorial to her, that was hard to do, but I think they also did a good job balancing it and weaving it into what the show is.
It's always difficult for a series to lose a cast member, especially one as long-running and central to the character dynamics as Mallory. After Archer returned to its spy parody roots after three seasons of Archer's coma dreams, the series didn't let its characters develop in any significant way. By the way Benjamin talks about Walter's loss, it's clear that the characters and show itself will be forced to grow and adjust whether they want to or not.
Archer has run much longer than most shows, thanks to its signature caustic style of humor and talented voice cast. However, nothing lasts forever, and if the series wants to maintain its quality, it'll have to let the characters really feel the loss of one of their own. Walter's incredible talent brought so much to Archer, and her loss will definitely reshape how the stories are told, so it'll be interesting to see how the series develops.
