‘Anthony is someone who likes to study and understand everything to a tee.' 🥊 Metro spoke to Richard Riakporhe about how Anthony Joshua's camp feels about his past defeat to Oleksandr Usyk and how they are going to approach tonight's bout👇

In the months following his defeat Oleksandr Usyk, Anthony Joshua conceded ‘there were too many voices’ in his corner of the ring that fateful night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Angel Fernandez, recruited by Joshua in 2019, is the only surviving member of the corner team from that night, promoted to oversee camp for Saturday’s rematch in Jeddah. Three months ago, the revered Robert Garcia was brought in as co-trainer, providing world title experience and wise counsel in a closely-knit team.

A former champion himself, he has guided 14 fighters to world titles including Abner Mares, Marcos Maidana and brother Mikey Garcia. Given his profile, his role has been heavily scrutinised in the weeks and months leading up to fight week. More tellingly, he has been in an environment where there has been no hesitation in cutting through the superficial praise typified by those shouts of ‘brilliant AJ’! that emerged from his corner last September and delivering reality checks when needed.

Usyk vs. Joshua 2 round by round updatesUsyk vs. Joshua 2 round by round updatesOleksandr Usyk will defend his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts against former champion Anthony Joshua on Saturday at the Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The bout is a rematch of a Sept. 2021 fight that saw Usyk control the rounds from the opening bell en route to a unanimous decision on the scorecards (117-112, 116-112, 115-113). It was just the second defeat for the Brit in 26 professional fights to that point. Will Joshua find redemption in the Middle East similar to his rematch win over Anthony Ruiz Jr.? Or will the Ukrainian once again assert his dominance and keep his unblemished record?Heavyweight title contender Otto Wallin says he's picking Usyk on Saturday night.“It's hard to go against Usyk just because of what he did in the first fight,” Wallin told The Athletic. “It wasn't like it was a complete shutout, but Usyk was of course the better guy. Joshua looked like he was just fighting to survive and he didn't really go for it. It looked like a training session. That has a lot to do with confidence and it seemed like Joshua didn't want to get hit and risk being knocked out. Unfortunately that's a part of boxing and heavyweight boxing.“You always want to have good defense, that's very important, but at the same time you can't just go in there and expect to take no punches. You got to be ready for that and have an answer for it. You can't fight not to lose. You got to fight to win and I think that's a really big difference. When you fight not to lose, you're defensive, don't want to get hit and not really taking any risks. With a guy like Uysk, you need to take risks and be aggressive to take him out of his game plan. If you don't, he's just going to be brilliant and do his thing.”The Athletic will have full coverage of the mega-fight.
