Fast-forward to 2024. Weyant has conquered the art world instead of being swallowed by it. She shows with the Gagosian gallery , which is also Currin’s gallery. “John was the reason I started painting figures,” Weyant tells me. “I saw one of his paintings in my second year at art school, and it changed my life.” Currin says, “She seems to be close to something interesting in terms of good taste and bad taste, disciplined and lazy, controlled and sort of domineering.
The girls are all Weyant, sort of, discovering herself. The combination of sensuality, dark humor, and virtuoso technique made her work irresistible to many viewers, and the art world couldn’t get enough of it. The pandemic sent her back to Calgary, where she lived for four months with her parents and painted night and day. “I reset a lot of things in my life,” Weyant says. “I felt pressure, but never rushed, which was really special.
