Some 50 cars line up off the interstate waiting for gas outside of Norwood, Mass., in early 1974. The scene was repeated all over the country that year due to gasoline rationing.
With Bill France Sr. having stepped down in retirement at the end of the 1972 season , NASCAR was virtually helpless to adhere to increasing demands by the federal government.
