COVID cases climbed in Alabama for the seventh consecutive week.
Published: Jun. 04, 2022, 7:30 a.m.Cases climbed here for the seventh consecutive week, and the state saw the first major jump in hospitalizations since the start of the current wavelet. But how do the numbers now compare to the start of previous waves?
Still, the current mini-surge looks like a blip on the radar compared to some previous waves - especially the record-shattering omicron surge.Discounting some data delays, the omicron surge peaked at well over 10,000 cases per day in Alabama - substantially more than the current average of 807 cases per day.
Compared to the 32nd day from the start of each previous wave, Alabama’s current situation looks to be the least dire. If you include the current wavelet, there have been five distinct COVID surges so far in Alabama. Four of those five started as Alabama was facing relatively low case counts. The state’s first major COVID wave, which struck in June of 2020, started when Alabama was averaging around 374 cases per day. By the 32nd day, the state was averaging nearly 1,300 cases per day.
