Country shows are about more than rides and show bags. Many say they are a lifeline for farmers and regional communities doing it tough.
For many of us agriculture shows represent a fun day out with animals, show bags, and maybe a ride or two, but for farmers the events offer a rare chance to reconnect and celebrate the wins. Loxton Show Society president Ian Cass has experienced that stress first-hand as a former dryland farmer in the Riverland."Your mental health gets pretty bad when you're looking down the barrel financially."" can talk to others and share their woes.
"Probably quite a few years ago, it was starting to get a bit like that, we were not getting as many young people," he said."Now we're getting huge numbers of young people, and I think that's a healthy show. Melrose has brought together younger volunteers with more experienced people to put on new activities and breathe new life into the event."We're lucky that we've got new, younger people in and they're really trying to motivate it and kick it back into gear again," Mrs Walter said.In the south-east of South Australia every executive member of the Mundulla Show committee is under 30 years of age.
