Melody Horrill's deeply personal book reveals a powerful relationship.
, I volunteered with a research group studying wild dolphins in an estuary called the Port River in Adelaide, Australia. There I met the subject of the book—a solitary, injured dolphin called Jock.
My interactions with him had an enormous impact on my life and helped introduce me to the wonders of nature and heal from mypast. The book chronicles my distressing childhood, the liberating power of nature, and the joy of connecting with animals, in particular a wild dolphin. I hope the book will inspire people to appreciate marine mammals, their environment, and the natural world and perhaps inspire others affected by domestic violence to find healing.
With this learning came an understanding of the dangers all dolphins face from thoughtless human behavior or treating them as captive playthings. Also, the Port River is a challenging environment. It is an industrial hub and historically polluted. I have long advocated better protection of the river’s ecosystem and played a key role in lobbying to establish a government-sponsored dolphin sanctuary.
In my mind, these marine mammals became the close family I’d never had. From that, there are obvious themes of regaining trust,
