While Pala keeps himself busy managing the nonprofit on top of his schoolwork, he also makes sure to set aside time to keep running. ❤️ Kids4Community

While Pala keeps himself busy managing the nonprofit on top of his schoolwork, he also makes sure to set aside time to keep running. In addition to being a standout member of the Francis Parker High School track and cross country teams, Pala recently clocked 1:18:08 in the 2019 San Diego Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon—an average of 5:57 per mile pace—toYet all of the success and accolades don’t seem to faze him.

They compromise with an average of 40 to 70 miles a week. To balance running with the rest of his busy schedule, Pala voluntarily wakes up at 4:30 a.m. on school days to complete a 4.5-mile treadmill workout—his idea, not Loureiro’s—tackles homework in between classes and on car rides, runs again after school, and devotes two to 17 hours a week at nights and on the weekends to managing Kids4Community. “He has the best heart,” Loureiro said. “That’s the best way to describe him.

Since running and philanthropic work are huge parts of Pala’s life, it makes sense that he would combine the two. Last March, Kids4Community hosted a local 5K to benefit a program that builds housing in San Diego. With the support of 150 high school volunteers and about 500 runners, the event raised $10,000, Pala said.

As for his future goals, Pala, who started running seriously in middle school and now loves it for “the sense of freedom” it provides, hopes to run a half or 10K to raise additional funds for Kids4Community. Down the road, he wants to run cross country at Stanford University, and perhaps one day make the Olympics in the 5,000 meters. “It’s my sport, but it’s also my passion, and it’s the thing I love doing,” Pala says.
