Plano West graduate Alex Robinson recently swam the English Channel in just over 11 hours.
Alex Robinson swam the English Channel in June, powering through jellyfish stings to swim 18 nautical miles.
For 18 months, he trained seriously, swimming 15 hours a week at his local indoor pool or in Lake Michigan, plus sitting another 2-3 hours a week in a cold tub and near freezing water. He also had to pass a required six-hour swim test in water below at least 61 degrees to prove he was physically hardy enough to attack the Channel.
Then there was his mom, Dianne Robinson, a self-employed polygraph administrator based in Plano who made the trip to England to watch her son pursue his dream. “I didn’t see any while I was swimming but when it’s pitch black and you see a shadow in the water, you can’t help but wonder what it is,” Robinson said.“I knew if I could get to sunrise, it would give me an emotional boost,” Robinson said. “By then I knew I was going to make it.”Robinson kept his head down, trying hard not to look at the French coast as it crept slowly toward him. But when he was three miles away and about 90 minutes left, he looked up and knew he had done it.
