Some areas of Brooklyn and Queens recorded 7-to-8 inches of rain. New York City's sewer system can only handle about 2 inches of rain an hour.

But on the other hand, I have to say that it is a predictable emergency. If you think about it - we had Hurricane Ida two years ago, where we had people who perished and who died and the lowlands were flooded in New York. I feel like we really need a new era of landscape infrastructure overlay for the city because we have no spaces for this water to safely go. So as much as yes, we need to unclog some of the drains, we actually need to think much bigger and differently about our relationship to water now.

But then I would say more broadly, we have to change our attitude about like, there's something that's inherently New Yorker about just like, “Build it, you know, we're going to do this.” We actually have to think very deeply about sort of unbuilding certain areas of the city, about providing a kind of contiguous landscape spaces for the water to flow and to flow safely.
