Jet Li's 1994 movie Fist of Legend flipps the iconic ending of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury in a big way. In Fist of Fury, Bruce Lee plays Chen Zhen, who returns to China's Jing Wu Men martial arts academy to learn that his sifu Huo Yuanjia has died. Suspecting foul play, Chen Zhen comes to learn that he was poisoned by a spy on behalf of the Japanese occupation of China, and sets about seeking revenge.

Though an official "execution" takes place, the final scene reveals that Chen Zhen's demise was faked, with the young kung fu master fleeing to Japan to start a new life with his girlfriend Mitsuko .
