Lights, cameras, redwoods.

The area where the old Highway 101 once cut through Humboldt Redwoods State Park has been used more recently as a film location. In a little-explored corner of Humboldt Redwoods State Park near where Robinson Creek flows into the Eel River, film location manager and scout Rowdy Kelley is showing me where Jaden Smith got chased by killer baboons in the sci-fi blockbuster “After Earth.”

This film publicity image released by Sony-Columbia Pictures shows Jaden Smith in a scene from"After Earth."As the guy who scouts and manages locations, part of Kelley’s job is to prevent this stuff from happening, along with all kinds of other responsibilities. For Kelley, the road to becoming a location scout was unusual. He spent the early part of his life in Humboldt County and has always been an outdoorsy sort of person — and like his parents — a rodeo guy. After his parents separated and his mom moved to Dallas, he went with her, finished high school and became a salesman of fine Italian suits. “I was a fashion freak in Dallas,” he says.

Though Kelley usually serves as a location scout and manager, he’s occasionally taken on roles as an actor and even as a stuntman. He paints houses sometimes. Oh, and he’s also worked on numerous TV and movie passion projects involving. “Being a Bigfooter I've never made any money,” he says. “In fact, it's costing me a lot of money to be a Bigfooter.”
