Experts say a combination of factors have led to wildfires in Hawaii claiming 53 lives, putting it in the top 10 deadliest fires in the 21st century globally and the worst in Hawaii's history.

Lahaina's historic Waiola Church and a nearby mission were engulfed in flames.Rick McRae, a bushfire expert at UNSW, has been monitoring satellite imagery to understand what is fuelling the blazes.

Jason Otkin, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Wisconsin says Hawaii has officially experienced a "flash drought" over the past few weeks. "The most destructive fires usually occur during drought. If an area falls into drought quickly, that means there is a longer window of time for fires to occur," Mr Otkin said.In studying the satellite feeds, Mr McRae says he noticed similarities to the conditions causing Australia's Black Summer bushfires in 2019-20.
