Manly and Samoan hooker Gordon Chan Kum Tong made the most of a chance poolside encounter with another NRL star.
Gordon Chan Kum Tong’s dream to represent Samoa started with a chance meeting at a public pool in western Sydney in September.
Sea Eagles fans remember Chan Kum Tong standing out during the trials in Gosford at the start of the year.Roosters rake Brandon Smith, known as the ‘Cheese’, was so impressed by his little nuggety doppelgänger, he affectionately dubbed him ‘Little Cheese’. The 21-year-old came through the Canterbury juniors, but loved Benji Marshall and the Wests Tigers. There is a suburban newspaper clipping from 2013, headlined ‘Gordon’s Tigers Dream’, with the introduction: “The Bulldogs will have to act fast to snare young five-eighth Gordon Chan Kum Tong because he has his sights firmly set on pulling on the Wests Tigers jersey one day.”
Manly pounced on Chan Kum Tong when he was 14, and packed him on to the mini-bus that would go via Fairfield and Rooty Hill before stopping on the northern beaches. Josh Schuster was on the same bus, as was the late Keith Titmuss, who Chan Kum Tong labelled as his “big brother”.
