Marlowe is based on John Banville's novel 'Black-Eyed Blonde.' 1 change to the movie's setting makes it feel more authentic and prevents a book issue.

Marlowe - the latest incarnation of Raymond Chandler's hard-boiled literary detective - is based on John Banville's 2014 novel "The Black-Eyed Blonde," and one simple change honors Chandler's work from the '30s and '40s while making the movie itself feel more authentic. It finds Philip Marlowe hot on the case of Nico Peterson , an erstwhile Hollywood prop specialist who's disappeared and left his wealthy lover Clare Cavendish distraught.

In Chandler's Marlowe novels, where once Marlowe would yell, "Go boil your head!" to a corrupt police officer, he now says things like, "F*** off!" which might sound crass in the late '30s, but captures the intensity of the phrase for modern audiences. The point of the phrase was always there for Chandler, but the author had to contend with strict editing standards that made swearing impermissible.
