More than 429,000 water customers will receive notices next week asking to self report their pipe materials to Public Works.

Houston Public Works will send out notices to more than 429,000 water customers next week in an effort to figure out what their pipes are made of, and suss out whether any of them contain lead. The move comes after the President Joe Biden administration earlier this week called for cities to remove all lead pipes within the next decade to ensure clean drinking water.

Houston needs $4.93 billion for water repairs. Will Texas lawmakers help pay the bill? The “notice of unknown water service line material,” will begin to go out to customers starting next week, Jones said. If a customer receives a notice, it doesn’t conclusively mean their pipes contain lead, only that the city does not know what their lines are made of.

Houston lost 36 billion gallons of water from leaky pipes since 2023. That's enough to supply an entire city It’s been illegal to build with lead pipes almost 40 years, but gaps in International Building Code don’t require developers to disclose what kind of pipes they’re installing into homes and buildings, Jones said. She added that many records the city has kept on its pipes have been lost over the years as city tracking mechanisms have switched from paper to digital.
