The Texans coaching staff will spend this week deciding whether the Driskel Cat was a one-time gimmick or a short-term solution to the franchise’s long-term offensive problem. Driskel has hit the league’s three-game maximum for practice squad elevations. The Texans must sign him to the active roster if they want to deploy him again in any of their four remaining games.
The 6-4, 235-pound quarterback could also be the team’s best available runner, because Pierce could be potentially sidelined for the next two games. After the Texans waived Eno Benjamin on Tuesday, the team’s two remaining running backs, Rex Burkhead and Dare Ogunbowale, have combined for only 34 carries, 107 yards and a touchdown this season.
There were some notable limitations within Houston’s two-quarterback system on Sunday. Mills is the better passer, Driskel is the better runner, and the tendencies within their rotation reflected their strengths. This could risk potential predictability. “There were a couple of tight window throws, balls being thrown on time, scrambling around it the pocket,” Smith said. “All of the things that we want to see from our quarterback that was required of the quarterback position yesterday is what Davis did.”
