This version of the famous opera from Houston Grand Opera is directed by Waco-born visionary Robert Wilson.
Already the leading operatic composer of his era, Puccini outdid himself with “Turandot.” Incorporating the tonal innovations of peers such as Debussy and Stravinsky, he also took pains to evoke the opera’s mythical Chinese setting. He also died before he could complete the finale, a love duet between the title princess and Kalaf, the foreign prince determined to win her hand.
HGO’s version, as directed by Robert Wilson — the polymathic Waco native perhaps best known for co-writing Phillip Glass’ “Einstein on the Beach — attempts to defang the opera’s more cringeworthy elements through a more abstract approach to makeup, highly stylized costumery, and casting several singers of Asian ancestry.
“I think Luciano Pavarotti did a great disservice to every tenor on the planet singing that aria as well as he did, because the world knows his voice singing that aria,” Heaston says. “So every tenor has to live up to that moment, and they know they do.”
