‘A dream come true’: This Is It Soul Food to open second location in Humble
Bakers prepare trays of tea cakes, the recipe by owner Craig Joseph’s mother-in-law. Ingredients from longtime vendors are stocked. Staff members prepare more chicken, open cheese for macaroni, and roll out a tray of candied yams, the last dish to be ready for the lunch rush.
A Houston firefighter, Joseph was not interested in taking over the business but changed his mind when an aging Jones was approached by a buyer who offered to buy the restaurant for what Joseph said was a fraction of its worth. Joseph began running the restaurant in 1994. April Brown, a frequent customer since 2018, said she likes the restaurant's history and called the staff gracious and kind.Brown said families come here for the menu that reminds them of home-cooked meals.
“Because without the community, there wouldn’t be This Is It,” Joseph said. “We just show our gratitude for their support by giving back to them in any small way we can.”Locating in Humble helps This Is It better serve its customer base, because customers come to the Third Ward location, near Texas Southern University, from all over the Houston area—including from as far as Spring, Porter and Humble, Joseph said.
