Houston's scorching heat can take a toll on way more than just your energy bills, outdoor summer plans and pets. It can also be rough on your tires.

Though it may not be immediately obvious, the hot summer temperatures actually make your tires more susceptible to road hazards like nails, screws and other metal debris, says Michael Covey, a local Discount Tire manager.

Summer typically sees more travelers on the roads, and the friction between a hot road and a tire can cause it to expand more than normal, Covey says. While some readers said road hazards are a rare occurrence that only crop up every few years, the majority said it happens to them regularly around Houston.

Some said the problems have been so bad that they've started avoiding certain roads, like Shepherd Drive and Richmond Avenue, altogether.
