Blooloop included the Houston Zoo at No. 9 on its list of top zoos and aquariums in the United States. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., was No. 1 and was the only zoo to rank higher than San Antonio's. The Monterey Bay Aquarium and the New England Aquarium were No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. The Houston Zoo's highly anticipated"Galápagos Islands," a $70-million state-of-the-art exhibit, was delayed earlier this year.
The 2.5-acre addition, which is part of Houston Zoo's centennial master plan, was initially scheduled to open this year. Due to supply chain issues and world-wide shortage of essential construction materials including acrylic viewing panels,"Galápagos Islands" is now expected to debut in early 2023.Blooloop determined the best zoos and aquariums based on each attraction's work in the fields of conservation, animal welfare and education.
The zoo’s mission is to “inspire its community to love, engage with, act for and protect animals and the places they live,” Blooloop said in its description of the zoo.
