A police officer had been relieved of duty and was facing charges after allegedly shooting his wife at an apartment in northwest Houston,The officer, whom Finner declined to name until charges were formalized, was a 31-year-old officer assigned to the northwest division, Finner said. He was expected to be charged on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Finner said.
The news conference came hours after officers around 12:45 a.m. Monday responded to a shooting in the 10300 block of Clay Road, near Gessner, finding a 30-year-old woman who had been shot in the face, Finner said. Investigators determined an off-duty officer had shot his wife.Finner said the shooting shouldn’t detract from the work many officers do each day, but he wanted residents to know Houston police officers would be held accountable for their actions.
Finner declined to provide many specifics about the shooting, saying it was part of an active investigation. But preliminary investigation shows the off-duty officer used a rifle in the shooting, Finner said. The department does not issue rifles, he said. The woman was taken to a hospital and was in serious condition, Finner said. He was praying she would be OK, he said.
The officer immediately was relieved of duty and any potential charges remained pending as of Monday morning, Finner said.
