Houston police improve rate of homicide arrests after lower case clearances during pandemic

Houston police were celebrating an uptick in the percentage of homicide cases detectives solved in 2022 and the first five months of 2023 after they'd hit their lowest clearance rate in 2020. The sudden increase was the result of improved resources and better training for investigators, according to a supervisor in the department.

That year, department leadership met with officials in the homicide division and promised to deliver additional resources, Meeler said. Each year since, the division’s clearance rate has improved – in 2021, it was around 58 percent ; in 2022, it rose to 75 percent ; and HPD is on track to clear around 80 percent through May of this year, according to data provided by Meeler.

The veteran homicide supervisor said some of the ebb and flow in the murder rate was because, as homicides fell to a low in 2012, the division downsized because there was less work.CRIME IN 2023:, Chief Troy Finner said violent crime declined in all the City Council districts in 2022 and the murder rate dropped by 9 percent citywide, compared with 2021. The department recorded 435 murders in 2022, a drop of 42 from 2021.
