Runners take off from the starting line for the 51st Chevron Houston Marathon on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023 in Houston.Houston Marathon race director Wade Morehead was effusive with his compliments Sunday – as per usual – bragging on his staff, the 150-plus volunteers, the 20,000-plus runners and the multiple city departments that lend a hand with Houston’s largest single-day sports gathering.

“It was an absolutely amazing weekend,” Morehead said. “The crowds were great and there was a lot for them to cheer about with Emily Sisson’s American record and both men’s races going shoulder-to-shoulder down Lamar, battling to the finish line. The whole city put on a great show.” He also noted that, despite temperatures that were higher than normal for mid-January, “We handled most of our medical situations ourselves.”

Morehead saved a final shout-out for Mayor Sylvester Turner, who has been “a huge supporter of ours every year” throughout his two terms going back to January 2016. Turner, for his part, referred to Sunday as “my swan song.” The registration for the Jan. 14, 2024, races – six days following college football’s national championship game at NRG Stadium – opened at 4 p.m. Sunday and continues through Jan. 31.
