After video is released of Tyre Nichols arrest, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo react and local activists plan protest.
Houston leaders are urging peace during protests and sending condolences to the Nichols family.
"Words don’t suffice in response to the horror Mr. Nichols and his family have suffered. My heart goes out to them," County Judge Lina Hidalgo said."At minimum, this tragedy must continue reminding us that fighting for safer communities does not and cannot mean abandoning reform." Five fired Memphis police officers have been charged with murder in connection with Nichols’ death. Video shows that they beat him for several minutes after a Jan. 7 traffic stop. He died three days later.
"My condolences and prayers to the Nichols family. Words are inadequate to explain what happened to #TyreNichols other than it should not have happened and certainly not at the hands of law enforcement. We must work together to preserve and safeguard life not take it away," Mayor Sylvester Turner posted on Twitter.“Please know their actions do not reflect the great work the men and women do everyday in our profession,” Finner said.
The chief in the statement said police would"continue to monitor events" in Memphis and around the country.
