Houstonians won't see an increase on the city side of their tax bills this year. The city does, however, need to find an additional $7 million in revenue.

Houston City Council voted unanimously to keep its tax rate at just under 52 cents per $100 of a home’s value Wednesday after narrowly avoiding a possible tax increase to make up the costs of this year’s storms. The city, though, still needs to find a way to make up $7 million to cover storm costs. Mayor John Whitmire ’s administration hopes those savings will be found in potential inefficiencies discovered in a government-wide audit and collaboration with Houston’s partners.

Houston property tax hike will not happen after state steps in with $50M for disaster relief The proposal to keep taxes the same that was passed Wednesday was proposed by Whitmire. The competing proposal, brought forward by Council Members Sallie Alcorn, Letitia Plummer, Mario Castillo and Joaquin Martinez under Proposition A, would have raised the city’s tax rate by just under 6%.
