Texas and Houston employers are still adding jobs at a healthy clip even as the Federal Reserve strives to slow the economy. Texas added 40,000 jobs in September, bringing total state employment to a new high for the eleventh month in a row.

. In Houston, employers boosted payrolls for the 19th consecutive month, adding nearly 11,000 jobs in September.

The labor market has remained strong despite high inflation, a sharp increase in interest rates, and growing fears of recession. The nation added more than 260,000 jobs in September. The state’s employment now stands at 13.6 million. Pennsylvania’s population is just shy of 13 million, according to the Census. The Houston area's employment, about 3.3 million, exceeds the populations of Utah, Nevada or Iowa.

Payrolls in the mining and logging sector — dominated by the oil and gas industry in Texas — were essentially unchanged, with the sector shedding 200 jobs over the month.
