Gun owners in Houston are being asked to sell their weapons back to city officials in an attempt to curb the region's gun violence.
The gift cards are as follows: $50 for every non-functioning gun, $100 for a rifle, $150 for a handgun and $200 for an assault rifle. Officials require that the guns be unloaded and kept in the trunk of a vehicle. "Our goal is to get unwanted guns off the streets to prevent their use in a crime or an accidental shooting," Turner said in a statement., which in May fell below what it was by that time in 2021. In 2020, Houston recorded 400 homicides, followed by 469 the following year, according to HPD crime statistics.
