In keeping with the current season’s theme of strong heroines , general director and CEO Khori Dastoor was already planning a project for Isabel Leonard, the Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano coming off acclaimed Metropolitan Opera productions of “Pelléas et Mélisande” and “Dialogues of the Carmelites.” Then a sudden window of availability opened up for Matthew Polenzani, whom Dastoor calls “the most in-demand tenor in the world.” “Werther” became a must.
The book’s torrent of emotions and macabre conclusion caused a sensation. It marked a high point in the so-called Sturm und Drang era of German literature and became a cornerstone of the budding Romantic movement that swept across art, literature and music in the early 19th century. Shortly after its publication, countless young men adopted Werther’s signature look ; driven by their own romantic woes, enough of them committed suicide that the book wound up banned in several countries.
