The Oscars of the food world recognizes outstanding Houston area industry professionals for 2022 James Beard Awards
of Lucille’s Hospitality Group was the sole Houston semifinalist for the Outstanding Restaurateur category.
In the Best New Restaurant category, one of the top Beard awards, there is only one local semifinalist:in San Leon. A project from Prestige Oyster’s Raz Halili and chef Joe Cervantez, Pier 6 has been a hit since it opened in November 2020., the pastry chef for the H-Town Restaurant Group, was recognized for his work at Xochi with Houston’s sole semifinalist nomination for Outstanding Pastry Chef.
The finalists for the Beard awards will be announced on March 16 and the awards will follow on June 13 in Chicago. The awards program recognizing culinary excellence went through some agonizing introspection in recent years. After scrapping the 2020 awards, the James Beard Foundation conducted an internal audit after accusations of lack of transparency and an absence of racial inclusion in its nominations and awards process.
