A winter storm is bringing snow, ice, and freezing temperatures to Houston, prompting widespread school closures and temporary airport shutdowns. Officials urge residents to stay home and prepare for hazardous travel conditions.

A winter storm is set to bring snow to Houston , accompanied by a risk of ice and hazardous road conditions on Tuesday and early Wednesday. A winter storm warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Light cold drizzle, light sleet or freezing rain could start as early as 10 p.m. Monday. Snow is anticipated across the area between midnight and approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Should we manage to keep as many people off the roads on Tuesday and Wednesday, the snow could be quite enjoyable, especially since some areas might experience 4 feet or more. However, the snow arrives alongside very cold air. Temperatures today will only reach near 40 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows on Tuesday dipping into the upper 20s. Following a spectacular snowy Tuesday morning, attention will shift to the dangerous hard freeze Tuesday night as temperatures plummet to the low 20s, and even some upper teens. This means any moisture on roadways will freeze, making travel extremely hazardous during the first half of Wednesday. Sunshine is expected to bring warmer afternoons from Thursday through the weekend. While roads are being pre-treated, officials strongly advise against travel and warn that roads should not be considered safe. Houston Mayor John Whitmire urges people to gather food and water supplies by Monday evening and requests employers to allow non-essential employees to stay home. 'We are doing everything we can as a city to prepare for this winter storm. We will be here to keep you safe and respond to emergencies, but we need your help,' Mayor Whitmire stated. 'Please limit your activities and stay home if you can. We don't want you to risk your life or jeopardize the safety of our police officers and firefighters if they have to rescue you when you could have stayed home. Our first responders must remain focused on critical incidents as conditions worsen.' Both airports have announced that they will be 'temporarily suspending operations' on Tuesday due to the weather. The suspension is scheduled to begin at midnight on Tuesday. At this time, it is unknown when operations might resume at the airports. Airport officials say they will monitor conditions on Tuesday to determine if they can reopen on Wednesday. Hobby and Bush airports to close Tuesday. Dozens of schools are closed on Tuesday due to the winter storm. These include Houston ISD, Humble ISD, Katy ISD, Spring ISD, and more. Click here to see the complete list
