February is Black History Month and what better way to celebrate than with exploring Houston's Black history at museums and landmarks, trying new food and supporting Black owned businesses.
Freedmen’s Town was one of the nation’s most prosperous Black communities settled by former enslaved families. Built in 1866 in Houston’s Fourth Ward, the neighborhood features original structures and handmade brick-paved roads laid by freed slaves. 1111 Genesee;Located in a charming two-story brick house, built in 1943, The Gite Gallery, owned and curated by Lloyd Gite will take you on an amazing African journey with its colorful and bold art.
The gallery features unique art, artifacts, original paintings, hand carved wooden statues, bronze sculptures, brightly colored textiles and more from sub-Saharan Africa. 2024 Alabama;Established in 1994 by creative director and founder Sherese Campbell, Houston City Dance Studio is a nonprofit organization dedicated to embracing Houston's ethnic diversity through dance and performing arts.
