The Houston Astros have released former MVP Jose Abreu, eating the rest of his contract.
The Houston Astros have released three-time All-Star and 2020 American League MVP José Abreu. General manager Dana Brown made the announcement on Friday.Abreu, 37, signed a three-year, $58.5 million deal with the Astros ahead of the 2023 season. He's struggled mightily over the last two seasons, and was even optioned to the minor leagues earlier this year in an unprecedented move for someone of his stature.
However, they've decided that it's better to eat that money rather than having him continue to play.Abreu signed with the defending-champion Astros ahead of the 2023 season in a move that appeared to set them up for another World Series victory. Last year, Abreu had a solid season, appearing in 141 games and slashing .237/.296/.383 with 18 home runs and 90 RBIs. This year, however, the wheels fell off.Abreu appeared in just 35 games, slashing .124/.167/.
