Separated by just minutes, several Houston-area babies vied to be the first born of the year
Sebastian Trapp was born ten minutes after midnight on New Year's Day, making him one of the first babies born in 2023 in the Houston area on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital in Sugar Land.In her tight-knit family, Marielena Cardenas knew that her first child would be spoiled rotten — if he ever decided to show up.
Already past her due date and with her family taking bets on when the baby would arrive, Cardenas, 25, went into labor at home and waited until Saturday evening to go to the hospital. From there, it was just a matter of whether Sebastian would come before midnight and be born in 2022 or 2023. Sebastian, who registered in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 20.25 inches, joined dozens of babies born in and around the city as many Houstonians rang in the new year with parties, drinks and fireworks. This year there was a new twist to the story of the Houston area’s newest arrival after the stroke of midnight.
