David Mundee After squandering a match point in the fourth set, Houston Academy’s volleyball team rebounded with a fast start in the fifth and deciding set and then held on to down Northside Methodist Academy Tuesday night in a Class 3A, Area 3 match at HA’s Ron Watson Court at Doug Killingsworth Gym.“That was a freaking battle,” Houston Academy head coach Hannah Braswell said to Northside Methodist fans as they were exciting the gym.
Now tied, the Knights surged ahead when a Dana Cool block went off a Raider defender and fell to the ground, giving Northside Methodist a 25-24 advantage. Houston Academy extended the advantage to 8-2 off a kill by Ann Davis Sinquefield off an assist from Rutland plus an ace from Gay.“We moved one back and we collapsed the court a little bit to take away some of their court space that their servers were seeing on the court,” Braswell said of going to a four-serve receive alignment in the back. “We also told them that we had to hit and accelerate to the ball . Our setters had to set them up and our passes had to be great from the back row.
“You can’t afford to get down in a fifth set to 15,” the Knights’ Hicks said of having to overcome the deficit in the final set. “Inconsistent serving and getting down on our energy .” Houston Academy dominated the first set, leading from the start and capitalizing on numerous Knights hitting error in winning 25-16.
