Household income is on the rise in Alabama, but not in every county.
Alabamians are earning more money than they used to. Most of them, anyway.
The new estimates show the median annual household income in Alabama increased to just over $52,000 per year during the five year period from 2016 to 2020. That’s up from around $44,000 for the previous five year period, from 2011 to 2015. When controlling for inflation, every state except Alaska saw an increase in median household income over that time.[Can’t see the map?Eight of Alabama’s 67 counties saw decreases in inflation-adjusted household income over the second half of the decade. They were led by Hale County, one of a handful of Black Belt area counties to make the list of counties with shrinking income.
The other counties where median household income decreased were Perry , Washington , Dale , Marengo , Bullock , Barbour and Blount . Choctaw County also only saw an adjusted increase in median income of less than $13 a year, making it essentially stagnant there.
