Sarah Kimmel, a family tech expert based in Utah, said AI data centers need what is called random access memory - or "RAM" to operate. However, our everyday devices - such as smartphones and laptops - also need RAM, leaving it in high demand and short supply. “People are building these giant data centers and taking all the RAM for the computers that are handling these processors," said Kimmel.So if you planned on buying some new gear this year, Kimmel said there are some things to consider to help lower the price. "It really depends on what your needs are," she said. "You're going to want to really pay attention to the specs of the devices that you are buying." Kimmel said newer computers and smartphones will be more expensive. But that doesn't mean the older models are a better choice for a purchase. She said before you start shopping, figure out how much storage space and RAM you need based on what you'll use the device for. For example, a student writing essays for class may not require a lot of storage space or RAM to complete their tasks. However, a video editor might want to invest in a more powerful system. Shoppers can save on the older or lower-end models, but Kimmel said that could also leave you with less bang for your buck.Kimmel said she likes to use tools such as Google Shopping to purchase new tech.
