House Republicans are prioritizing immigration reform in the new 119th Congress, aiming to expand deportation criteria beyond convicted criminals.
House Republicans will convene the new 119th Congress on Friday with a list of 12 bills to be considered, many of which aim to expand the criteria for the arrest and potential deportation of undocumented immigrants in the United States. These bills would likely widen the scope of removal beyond convicted criminals and individuals already ordered deported by an immigration judge, potentially encompassing a larger segment of the undocumented population starting January 20th. Rep.
Tony Gonzales (R-TX), whose district encompasses 40% of the 2,000-mile southern border, stated that the immigration focus of these bills reflects the GOP's understanding of public demands. 'The American people demand an 180-degree cleanup of the mess that President Biden created at the border,' Gonzales said in a statement Thursday. 'That’s why Congress is taking immediate action this new session to ramp up deportations, especially for criminal aliens, and improve border security overall. This needs to be priority No. 1, 2, and 3.' Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) holds a news conference on border security after the deaths of Jose Lerma, 67, and Isabel Lerma, 65, near Batesville, Texas, who were killed in a high-speed chase involving migrant smugglers, at the Capitol in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023. Once the speaker is chosen and new members are sworn in, the House will vote to approve the package, which includes rules for 12 bills to come to the House floor separately for a vote in the coming weeks, jump-starting the legislative process
