A group of House Republicans raised new American flags outside of Washington, D.C.’s Union Station Wednesday night hours after protesters took them down, burned them and replaced them with Palestinian flags.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Reps. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, Brandon Williams, R-N.Y., Rudy Yakym, R-Ind. and other lawmakers gathered to raise flags they said had flown over the Capitol and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Protesters opposing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress had burned the flags next to an effigy of the leader.. “Instead of protesting, you should be standing with your country, and we will.”“The protesters were here – pro-Hamas protesters – they tore these flags down, and they put up Palestinian flags,” Rep. Yakym said. “But today, we’re gonna raise the American flags.” The lawmakers noted they went to Union Station immediately after a House voting session. In a video posted to social media, Rep. Williams said he recruited the congressmembers after driving past the flagpoles to get to the Capitol. “Tonight as I drove in to votes, I drove by Union Station here in Washington, D.C. and observed that the flagpoles where our American flags were burned today by the Hamas protesters were still bare, and our flag had not been restored,” he. “I recruited a number of fellow members of Congress with me, including the speaker and a bunch of Navy vets, Marine vets.” After the protesters lit the flag on fire hours earlier, some danced around it and sung. Demonstrations around the district took place throughout the day, with organizers criticizing the U.S.’ involvement in the Israel-Hamas war. Claudia de la Cruz, who is running for President as a member of the Party for Socialism & Liberation, told a crowd outside the Capitol that she was not going to give Vice President Kamala Harris a “pass” because of her race and gender. “Whatever new face of imperialism they are trying to bring forth, we know that the United States government sponsors terrorists,” Cruz said. “We know that U.S. Congress, that Biden, that Blinken, Kamala Harris – ‘cause we’re not gonna give her a pass ‘cause she’s Black and she a woman – are complicit of terrorism.”Have questions, concerns or tips?
