House Oversight Committee Republicans blocked a Democratic attempt to subpoena Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), for testimony. The move comes as DOGE faces scrutiny for its efforts to cut federal spending, including a proposed shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the halting of a $50 million payment for 'condoms in Gaza'. Democrats argue that Musk is overstepping his bounds and wielding power reserved for elected officials, while Republicans maintain that Democrats had ample opportunities to hear from Musk previously.
House Oversight Committee Republicans on Wednesday blocked an attempt by Democrats to summon Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk for testimony.
The presidential advisory committee, which holds no power other than issuing recommendations, last week also discovered and halted an outgoing payment of $50 million for “condoms in Gaza,” according to the White House. The steps sparked outrage among Democrats who argued Musk is wielding power only allowed to elected officials.
“You read that right – blocked without debate,” he added. “If Republicans are such big fans of Elon Musk’s hostile takeover of our government, why are they so afraid to hear from him? Because they know you, the American people, aren't gonna like what he has to say.”“So, I’m in the ‘right sizing government’ hearing and the opening remarks from the chair were all about Elon Musk so we asked to subpoena him,” she said via X.
“You all could have invited Mr. Musk to be your minority witness, but you all chose to have a college professor, which is what you normally choose to have as a witness at a hearing,” he said. “You all had an opportunity to invite Elon Musk and you chose not to.”
