A second professional sports plan, that allows an almost certain sales tax hike in Salt Lake City to finance an “entertainment and sports” zone downtown—anchored by the Utah Jazz and a new potential NHL team—passed the Utah House Thursday evening.
“This bill is an effort to restore Salt Lake City to its once and future glory,” said Rep. Jon Hawkins, floor sponsor. “That’s a really good question,” said Senate President Stuart Adams. “If you talk to Ryan Smith, it’s a lot easier to take a hayfield and start over again, than it is to tear down or try to move buildings.”
2News also sent questions to the Jazz, and a person purported to be a representative of Smith, asking how much money Smith is prepared to put into the project area. There were no replies on Thursday.
