Mississippi House passes bill mandating hunters to report harvested deer. The bill aims to provide crucial data for wildlife management and disease monitoring.
Mississippi would soon join all other states in mandating hunters to report the white-tailed deer they harvest each season. The House passed HB 816 on Tuesday by a vote of 79-28, sending the bill to the Senate. The Senate had previously rejected a similar measure passed by the House in 2022. Supporters of the bill, including House Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Chairman Bill Kinkade, R-Byhalia, argue that the reporting data is crucial for wildlife biologists and game management programs.
This information would enable better management of deer habitat and population, as well as monitoring and controlling the spread of chronic wasting disease. Kinkade explained that hunters would self-report their harvest electronically, utilizing a cell phone app similar to the existing system for reporting wild turkey harvests, or through a telephone reporting system. He emphasized that the reporting process would only take approximately 20 seconds and wouldn't require physical tags for the harvested deer. Kinkade highlighted that Mississippi is currently the only state without a harvest reporting system, despite being a pioneer in deer management. Rep. Chris Bell, D-Jackson, questioned how the state's management system functions without such reporting. The bill includes a citation penalty for failure to report, with fines ranging from $100 to $500.
