No injuries were reported after a hail of bullets were fired early Aug. 25 into a home owned by an East Chicago city councilman and occupied at the time by two adults and two young children.

On Aug. 25, the city’s ShotSpotter system recorded 28 shots fired at around 1:45 a.m. from its 2301 E. Columbus Drive location.Police responded to the home in the 4100 block of Hawthorne Street owned by East Chicago City Councilman Dwayne Rancifer, D-At Large, and discovered what appeared to be five bullet holes on the east side of the home under the living room window and another in taillight of a car parked at the residence and registered to Rancifer.

Rancifer this week said the home was occupied by a relative, her boyfriend and her 3-year-old and 5-month-old children at the time of the shootings. The occupants were shook up by the shooting and have not returned to the home, he said.He described the occupants as law-abiding citizens who work and are trying to raise the children and suspects the shooting was a case of mistaken identity. The home’s camera system did not catch an image of the shooter.

According to an East Chicago Police report on the incident, neither resident has any gang affiliation. Police arrived at the home shortly after ShotSpotter recorded the gunfire. On the scene police discovered 21 spent shell casings — one bullet fragment, 11 .40-caliber S&W casings and 10 9mm Luger casings. According to the police report, it is believed there were two shooters who were on foot at the time of the incident. At least one of the bullets penetrated the home, the report said.
