The House of Representatives has voted to approve the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, a bill written in response to an increase in anti-Asian violence during the coronavirus pandemic.
"And as a result, Asian Americans have been beaten, slashed, spat on, and even set on fire and killed. The Asian American community is exhausted from being forced to endure this rise in bigotry and racist attacks. Asian Americans are tired of living in fear."
Advocates for the bill say the violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders can be traced back to former President Donald Trump calling COVID-19 the “China virus.” The bill was introduced before the March 16 shootings at Atlanta-area spas that left eight people dead, including six Asian women.
