Though the Lannisters play a small role on HouseOfTheDragon now, actor Jefferson Hall hints there's stronger material ahead for the family: 'To begin with, for sure, it’s gonna be a waiting game.'

House of the Dragon star Jefferson Hall hints there will be a much stronger story for House Lannister further along in the prequel show. As the first Game of Thrones spinoff series produced by HBO, House of the Dragon builds upon author George R.R. Martin's fantasy world by taking viewers back 200 years before the original series. The new show, which is now a few episodes into its first season, revolves around the Targaryen family and their famed civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Aside from the Targaryens, House of the Dragon has so far focused on members of families that didn't play a large role in Game of Thrones, such as the Hightowers and the Velaryons. However, House of the Dragon season 1, episode 3 introduced two characters with a very familiar last name: Jason and Tyland Lannister. Both played by Hall, the twins are ancestors of popular Game of Thrones characters Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion.

“This is a story about the Targaryens. And the Lannisters do play a strong role in it, but not from the offset. [Fans need] to be patient as far as that’s concerned. Because they are introduced to the story… and they are supporting that story. That’s not to say they don’t have a very strong, pivotal role within it as time goes on, but to begin with, for sure, it’s gonna be a waiting game.”

Martin has already charted the events and major players of the Dance of the Dragons in his 2018 novel Fire & Blood, and the Lannisters do come up within that history. As one of Westeros' most prominent families, it would be a noticeable omission if they weren't included within House of the Dragon.

However, Hall knows there is more coming for Jason and Tyland. House of the Dragon has already made some notable changes to Martin's canon, so there's a good chance the series will even expand upon Jason and Tyland's roles to push them beyond what they were in Fire & Blood. It would make sense for the creative team to do this, as audiences are already quite familiar with House Lannister.
