Matt Smith and Sonoya Mizuno in season 1 of House of the Dragon
Sonoya Mizuno may be best known for her role as the spymaster Mysaria in The House of the Dragon, but one of her best roles is as an animated character in one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.
While some excellent and understated sci-fi TV series focus on subtlety, shows in the Terminator franchise do not. The Terminator franchise is explosive, dystopian, full of action, and virtually inseparable from its original star, Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, while some fans have been concerned that the various Terminator projects outside the movies may suffer without the presence of Arnie, Terminator Zero proves that this is not the case, becoming one of the best and most underrated sci-fi TV series on Netflix. How Terminator Zero Ties Into The Terminator Franchise The Terminator timeline can be confusing, with multiple retcons that have tried to fix the mistakes made by the movies released after Terminator 2: Judgment Day. These have had limited success, with many of the Terminator movies proving overly complicated and unpopular, failing to capture the tone of the first two. However, the first animated entry in the franchise has been better-received. Terminator Zero has been an improvement on many of the unfortunate Terminator sequels by presenting some new ideas that do not revolve around Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular Terminator. This includes breaking the plot problem that has held the Terminator franchise back ever since Judgment Day. Rather than cast a Terminator as a bodyguard, the series involves a battle of wills between humans and AI. Terminator Zero fits into the Terminator franchise by clarifying an important time travel issue. Going back or forward in time creates a new timeline rather than changing the future. This is a huge development for upcoming projects linked to the Terminator story, establishing a multiverse in which Judgment Day has happened, been prevented, or been changed many times. This clarifies major events in the franchise. As Terminator Zero mostly takes place in 1997, the events are closely linked to the original Judgment Day, but the ending of Terminator Zero shows that the nature of Judgment Day has changed. It also set up a second season, which would allow the talented voice cast to return. These included Timothy Olyphant, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rosario Dawson. Why Terminator Zero Was Canceled After One Season While Terminator Zero season 2 could have set up the John Connor storyline that we have never really seen, showing how the character became the great Resistance leader, this was not to be. Despite excellent reviews and a better Rotten Tomatoes critics' rating than all other projects in the franchise since Terminator 2, the show was canceled after just one season. Terminator Zero's creator, Mattson Tomlin, gave an update on X, simply saying:"It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it." Netflix canceling Terminator Zero is heartbreaking, but not surprising, as the streaming platform has a bad habit of canceling great shows before their time. It is relatively rare for Netflix to explain a show's cancellation, so the fact that it appears to be due to low viewership will frustrate many fans. Some sci-fi shows become hits over time, and this could have been true for Terminator Zero, which had been described as"Terminator's best upgrade," but took a major risk as an animated project moving away from the well-known tropes. For now, Terminator Zero is a self-contained story, but its cast is involved in some exciting upcoming projects, with Olyphant appearing in Lucky and The Five-Star Weekend, and Mizuno making her directorial debut this year. As Mizuno was excellent as the Resistance soldier Eiko, it is possible that the character could appear in a later Terminator project, making Terminator Zero a new beginning for the franchise.
