California couple sentenced to life in prison for torturing their 13 children
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Southern California couple who pleaded guilty in February to torture, false imprisonment and endangering their children for dozens of years in a case that shocked the world were sentenced Friday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
"Their lives have been permanently altered in their ability to learn, grow and thrive," he continued. By pleading guilty, he said,"You spared your children from having to relive the humiliation and harm they endured in that house of horrors."First order of business at the hearing that was delayed over an hour was to tweak two counts for each because the victims mentioned in those counts were adults.
"That is the past and this is now," one son said."I love my parents and have forgiven them for a lot of the things that they did to us."He said he's getting a bachelor's in software engineering. "I’m sorry if I’ve done anything to cause them harm I hope the very best for my children in their future," he said after his attorney ended the written portion."I hope they are successful in their chosen professions. I am so proud of each and every one of my children. I miss all of my children.""I'm sorry for everything I’ve done to hurt my children,” she said through tears."I'm truly sorry. I love them more than they can ever imagine.
The couple's abusive behavior was unveiled in January 2018 after one of the couple's 13 children escaped their tract home and called police. The 17-year-old girl who made the call told authorities that she never finished first grade, wasn't allowed to take a bath and her siblings were chained in their beds.
